San Diego's sailing infrastructure runs deeper than its weather. The bay and surrounding waters support active racing fleets, cruising clubs, and formal sailing education programs that collectively produce a steady supply of experienced crew. If you are looking for the next generation of qualified mates and deckhands, this is where they come from.
San Diego Yacht Club
SDYC at Harbor Island is the largest and most active racing club on the bay. Its junior program, adult racing instruction, and long-distance racing participation (including the Transpac and other offshore events) produce crew with deep big-boat experience. Many current JADA crew and captains have racing backgrounds here or at affiliated clubs.
Mission Bay Yacht Club
MBYC on Mission Bay operates one of the region's most active junior sailing programs alongside adult racing. Mission Bay's protected waters make it an ideal training ground; crew from MBYC often have strong boat-handling instincts from the close-quarters racing typical of that venue.
Southwestern Yacht Club
Based in Point Loma, Southwestern runs a mix of keelboat and dinghy racing with strong adult participation. The longer offshore races that depart from or finish in San Diego (Newport–Ensenada, Pacific Cup qualifying) pull from this community.
Sailing schools
Formal ASA-certified sailing instruction is available from several San Diego operators. Graduates of ASA 101 through 114 have documented keelboat, coastal, and offshore skills; their logbooks are evidence of verifiable sea time. ASA 106 (Advanced Coastal Cruising) and above translates most directly to charter crew roles on a vessel like JADA.
What the training produces
Club racing experience specifically develops the crew communication, sail trim instincts, and boat handling skills that translate directly to charter work. A crew member who has called tacks on a J/24 or trimmed a spinnaker on a competitive keelboat knows the vocabulary of sailing and does not need to be walked through basic concepts. That is the foundation; the vessel-specific training (JADA's rig, her hardware, her departure procedure) is added on top.
JADA is a 1938 65-foot yawl chartering from Harbor Island, San Diego Bay. We are looking for mates, deckhands, and licensed captains for weekend charter sails.
